About Luowei Liao

Luowei Liao grew up in different parts of Southern China's Pearl River Delta region with a passion for traditional Chinese calligraphy and sociolinguistics. As a Japanese major undergraduate, she worked and studied in Tokyo and Osaka for four years and completed her master’s degree in Linguistics with a concentration on language policy in Japanese education at Kwansei Gakuin University.

In the classroom, she focuses on exploring sustainable ways to support students in nurturing, embracing, and utilizing their unique characteristics and diverse backgrounds in language learning.

As a true Southerner, she enjoys seeking the shade in humid hot weather and feasting on an extra spicy hotpot followed by creamy dark chocolate cakes.

She is the treasurer at the Japanese Teachers Association of Michigan (2024-2026) and an active member of the American Association of Teachers of Japanese and the American Association for Applied Linguistics.

Her research interests include language ideology, which explores the possibilities of emancipating the asymmetrical power relation between native and non-native speakers. Specifically, she aims to shed light on the impact of social media networking on the construction and negotiation of identification for second-language speakers of Japanese.
