Employers sample talent at Culinary Arts and Hospitality career fair

Zingerman’s, Aramark, Wendy’s, Little Ceasars, Busch’s Fresh Food Market, Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest and Katherine’s Catering were among the wide array of community employers who participated in last month’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality career fair.

Sponsored by WCC’s Career Services department, the fair was a big success with more than 50 attendees and 22 companies participating.

A personalized approach to job hunting

“Career fairs are an excellent opportunity for job seekers to connect with employers in a one-to-one setting,” said David Wildfong, WCC professional services faculty/student advisor. “In our digital age, a great deal of the hiring process is being moved online, which creates high levels of anonymity between both job seekers and prospective employers. Being able to personally speak with a company representative at a career fair is an invaluable opportunity for anyone who is looking for employment.”

Kizzy Sandifer, human resources manager at Aramark at the University of Michigan Ross School of Business, attended the career fair to identify up-and-coming talent with specific skills. “We are looking for prospective employees who embody the Aramark’s core mission of delivering experiences that enrich and nourish lives,” said Sandifer. “This can be through food, customer service or a vast number of other talents focused around ensuring that our clients enjoy the services we provide.”

“With our strong associate degree and certificate programs in Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts, we have many students who are qualified for a wide variety of entry-level jobs in these growing industries,” said Dr. Kimberly Hurns, dean of business and computer technologies. “All the job seekers were appreciative of the opportunity to personally meet prospective employers and be able to share their academic experiences and career aspirations. Career fairs bring together business and industry with qualified talent with an end result that supports a thriving economy.”
