Steps for a Successful Study Session
Whether you study alone, virtually, or with a group you need to prepare yourself to have successful study sessions.
- DETERMINE YOUR GOAL
Are you struggling with a specific problem, part of the course or the subject in general? Making a list of what you are finding challenging can help you narrow down how to spend your time and when to ask for help. - GATHER YOUR MATERIALS
Gather your notes, textbooks and class handouts. Get everything organized so you can make a study plan. - LOOK AT YOUR SCHEDULE
Academic struggles are often tied to time management. If you're having trouble finding time to complete your work, talk to your Success Coach or tutor about setting up a schedule that works for you. Did you know you can use Drop-in Study Help as a weekly check-in to get yourself organized and hold yourself accountable? - MAKE NOTES IN YOUR TEXT
Read or review the most recent reading assignments you've covered in class, along with any others that were difficult. Make notes and jot down questions as you go through the book. - TRY THE HOMEWORK
Attempt every question on your most recent assignment. Note the problems that were most difficult and why you struggled with them. - THINK ABOUT YOUR HISTORY
Have you struggled with other subjects in the past? Thinking about how you approached problems previously may help you or your tutor guide you in determining how to approach your current studies. - TALK TO THE INSTRUCTOR
Ask your instructor if they've noticed anything you are struggling with. They may be able to help you identify weaknesses in your work.
