How to apply:
- Apply to Washtenaw Community College only if you are not currently a WCC student.
- Apply to the STEM Scholars Program.
- Complete a current FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the coming academic year. This must be done before you can be considered for this program. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Who is eligible to participate?
- Any student interested in pursuing a STEM degree is eligible to participate. High school seniors, dual-enrolled high school/college students and current college students may apply. If admitted to the program, you will be part of a cohort and are required to begin the program in the fall semester as a full-time student. We will work with each STEM scholar to build a customized curriculum path based on their interests, skills and experience.
- You must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- You must have a high school GPA of 2.7 or higher or a college GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Benefits of becoming a STEM Scholar:
- Joining and working with a community of peers, mentors, faculty and administrators who are dedicated to assisting you in reaching your highest potential at the community college and at the university level. STEM scholars will benefit from the rich connections with alliance institutions (MSU, U of M, WMU, WSU) with seamless transfer, social and academic transition programs.
- Receiving qualitative academic coaching and customized curriculum that is designed to substantially increase your chances of success at the university level.
- Participating in summer research experiences and internships as well as benefiting from a specially-designed research methodology course. There will also be many opportunities to present research and participate in innovative, problem-solving team projects.
- Receiving scholarship funding opportunities.
- Attending a summer intensive that will help to prepare you on multiple levels for the rigors of your first two years at WCC, for a successful transfer and the subsequent two years at one of the alliance institutions.
WCC STEM Scholars’ Program:
WCC has partnered with four Michigan universities (Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Wayne State University and Western Michigan University) along with Mott Community College in a National Science Foundation grant (NSF), called the MI-LSAMP (Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation). The MI-LSAMP initiative supports historically underrepresented students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) as well as all STEM students. This program is designed to substantially increase the quantity and quality of STEM students successfully transferring and completing STEM degrees. In addition, WCC, Mott Community College and Michigan State University are participating in a NSF, S-STEM co-grant that supports economically disadvantaged students seeking STEM degrees in natural science at MSU.
