Stop Idling! The Harmful Effects of Car Idling

We have all been there before, you have about an hour in between classes, and you don’t want to start on your homework, but you can’t go home because there isn’t enough time. What do you do? Sit in your car and listen to music, or eat your lunch, or play on your phone. But did you know that you’re using over a half a gallon per hour that you run your car? Even in idle, that can amount to some serious cash! Not only that, the bigger effect is on the environment.

Bird-Friendly LIGHTS OUT!

After escaping the Central Park Zoo in February 2023, New York City residents took delight in spotting Flaco the Eagle Owl around the Big Apple. Unfortunately, Flaco died on February 23, 2024 after smashing into a window on a high-rise building in the Upper East Side. This is the fate of an estimated billion birds every year, a statistic which is the basis for Lights Out campaigns across the nation.

Zero Waste Household Products: Spending Less, Getting More

Sustainability is the act of allocating resource use in the present in a way that allows future generations access to the same levels of resource use. Some ways you can improve how sustainably you are living are by using products made in a sustainable manner, reducing waste, and extending the lifespan of things you already own. Making your own cleaning products is a great way to reduce waste and improve the products you are putting out into the environment.

Introducing the Center for Sustainability and Resilience (CSR) and our Hard-Working Staff!

The mission of the CSR is to cultivate an engaged, diverse community aiming to achieve sustainability and climate action goals through informed decision-making in the areas of curriculum, college culture, and campus operations. Leading our team are Bill Ghrist, CEM, as Director of Energy, Sustainability, and Facilities Planning, and me, Emily Thompson, Ph.D. in the Biology Department serving as Faculty Lead. Bill and I are excited to collaborate towards our shared goals. We are also delighted to introduce our three dynamic and engaging work-study students: Bree, Evan, and Roderick.
