Accessible Materials

If accessible materials are not already provided by the instructor, alternative format textbooks and materials are provided as an accommodation. All accommodations must be approved by an LSS Program Specialist.

Requesting Alternative Format Materials

Students submit a Semester Request each semester in Accommodate including Alternative Format materials in the request Once approved, the Assistive Technology Specialist will send an email with instructions. Students then follow up with the LSS Assistive Technology Specialist to obtain materials.

Verifying ownership

Textbooks must be purchased, and the receipt included with the specific request.

General Timeframes

Processing requests for alternative format textbooks can take up to two weeks. To ensure access to alternative format textbooks at the start of class, it is recommended that requests be submitted as soon as course registration has been completed and textbooks have been purchased.

Text to Speech Tools

ReadSpeaker and DocReader (text to speech tools) are built-in features which read aloud content in Blackboard and Canvas. Simply click the ReadSpeaker or DocReader icon to activate text-to-speech functions.

Kurzweil 3000 and TextAid are text-to-speech applications available to enrolled WCC students. Accounts are required to use the programs for demonstration, training or to set up an account:

Braille and Specialized Text

Conversion for subjects such as math, chemistry, computer science, or foreign languages may take longer to convert, given the extent of symbols and equations contained. Requests for Braille may also take longer due to the amount of reformatting necessary.

Appropriate Use of Alternative Format Media

Requests for alternative format materials require the following agreements: 1) Any materials provided by LSS may not be copied or distributed in any manner that violates copyright law. 2) Ownership of the printed version of the textbook is required in order to have alternative formats provided by LSS. If the printed version is returned or sold, the alternative format version will be returned to LSS or self-deleted.
